Common Tree Problems Around Humphrey
Columbus sits where the Loup River meets the Platte, and the river bottoms around town are lined with cottonwoods, willows, and hackberries. In town, older neighborhoods are full of large silver maples, elms, and ash trees that were planted decades ago. Out in the county, you will find farm windbreaks, shelterbelts, and acreages with a mix of shade trees and evergreens.
- Aging shade trees in older Columbus neighborhoods, many of them silver maples and cottonwoods that drop large limbs as they age
- Emerald ash borer, which threatens every untreated ash tree in the county
- Storm damage from straight-line winds, heavy spring snow, and ice
- Old windbreaks on farms and acreages that need dead trees removed and gaps cleaned out
